Life And Challenges Of A Filipino Work-From-Home Mom In Canada

This is my story about the life and challenges of a Filipino work-from-home mom in Canada and how I learned to balance work, motherhood, and faith in a new country.

This episode was originally from my guest appearance on A Few Steps Ahead — a heartwarming conversation about faith, family, and finding balance while building a life abroad.

When my husband and I left the Philippines for Canada ten years ago, we were already living a comfortable life.

Both of us had stable corporate jobs — I was an accountant, and he was in sales and marketing — and life back home was good. Life was busy but predictable, filled with office hours, weekend visits to family, and the rhythm of raising two kids.

But moving to a new country meant starting from zero.

Suddenly, I was in a place where we had no family nearby, no household help, and no idea how to rebuild our routines. That’s when I began searching for ways to earn from home — not just to make money, but to create a life that worked for us.

It was the beginning of the life and challenges of a Filipino work-from-home mom in Canada — a journey that taught me resilience, faith, and the value of small steps.

How I Discovered Online Work

As with anything, it started because I was having problems. Problems with a reliable house help who I can trust to care for my kids while I’m at work during the day. Add to that the mom-guilt I am feeling every morning I leave home to work.

I came across a webinar by Jomar Hilario, one of the pioneers of online work in the Philippines. Every Tuesday night, I’d listen to stories of people earning from home and creating flexible lives for their families.

I was intrigued. Could I really earn online while staying home with my kids?

My first few months were full of trial and error — learning new skills, managing clients, and trying to keep my kids quiet during calls. It wasn’t easy. But the small wins kept me going.

It wasn’t easy, but every small win reminded me why I’m doing this — to be present for my kids and still contribute to our finances.

It was like any other job — it required commitment, long hours, and constant learning. But every time I remembered my why — that I wanted to bring my kids to school, be present for their activities, and still contribute financially — it all felt worth it.

Lessons from the Life and Challenges of a Filipino Work-from-Home Mom in Canada: From Accountant to Facebook Ads Specialist

Over time, curiosity turned into skill — and then into confidence.

I found myself drawn to digital marketing and eventually specialized in Facebook Ads. What started as a side hustle became my full-time career.

It might sound like a huge shift, from accounting to marketing, but I realized the skills are actually connected. As an accountant, I was used to analyzing numbers, reading data, and spotting patterns. Running ads requires the same mindset, just with more creativity.

This journey reminded me: it’s never too late to start something new, no matter where you are.

The Role of Faith in My Journey

Moving to another country and starting over was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. We had good jobs back home, a stable life, and family nearby and suddenly, we were starting from zero.

What sustained me through that season was faith.

I’ve always believed that God goes before us — that His plans are bigger than ours. That mindset kept me grounded when things were uncertain. Over the years, I’ve seen that truth unfold again and again: God provides.

When life gets overwhelming — the work deadlines, the school pickups, the chores piling up — I make a conscious effort to pause. Fridays have become sacred for me. It’s my time to reset – to go out, go to Adoration, have dinner, watch a movie, or simply rest.

Those small moments are what make the life and challenges of a Filipino work-from-home mom in Canada so meaningful and fulfilling.

Building a Life and Marriage That Works

One of the best things about our setup now is how much my husband and I support each other. He sometimes works remotely, too, and we often find ourselves sharing ideas, taking breaks together, and cheering each other on.

It’s like having your officemate, partner, and best friend all in one.

That partnership is what keeps us steady. We’ve learned to work as a team — not just at home, but in life.

Lessons from Motherhood

Motherhood has been my greatest teacher.

No two kids are the same. What worked with my eldest never worked with my youngest — and that’s okay. I’ve learned to adjust, listen, and let go of perfection.

You don’t have to be the perfect mom. You just have to show up — even if you’re tired, messy, or figuring things out as you go.

Redefining Success

When I first started working online, my goal was simple: I wanted time freedom. I wanted the flexibility to be with my kids while earning a decent income.

Today, my definition of success has evolved.

Yes, I still value time freedom and flexibility, but I also want to use that freedom for something bigger — to give back, to volunteer, and to be part of a community that helps others grow.

It’s about purpose — using that flexibility to give back, to help others find their path, and to live a life anchored in faith and family.

Being able to do that while still being present for my family feels like true success. That’s the real win.

Gratitude and Grace

When I think about my journey, especially now that we just celebrated Canadian Thanksgiving, I can’t help but feel deeply grateful.

I’m thankful that I discovered online work — that I get to live the life and challenges of a Filipino work-from-home mom in Canada while raising my kids and building a career I love.

I’m thankful for the mentors and friends God has placed in my path, the ones who inspired and encouraged me when I doubted myself.

And most of all, I’m thankful for God’s grace. There are days when I’m exhausted, when I question if I’m doing enough, and yet somehow, I still find the strength to show up.

That’s not me, that’s God’s grace, the quiet strength that carries me through the chaos of work and motherhood.

Working from home, parenting, and building a life abroad aren’t easy. But with faith, patience, and purpose, they’re absolutely possible.

And if there’s one thing I’ve learned through it all, it’s this:
You don’t need to have it all figured out. You just need to take the next small step.
