Life as an immigrant mom is filled with both challenges and unexpected blessings.
Ten years ago, we packed up our lives into a few suitcases and boarded a one-way flight.
We left behind everything familiar, and started over in a new country with nothing but hope.
What I didn’t know then was how much this journey would shape me – not just as a mother, but as a woman learning to build a new life step by step.
I remember feeling a strange mix of excitement and deep anxiety.
What jobs would we find?
Would the little money we had stretch far enough?
How would the kids adjust to a brand-new place?
But the question that echoed the loudest in my heart was: “Is this really the right decision?”
What gave me the courage to keep moving forward was hope—and a promise I held close from Scripture: “The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.”
At least our family was together from the very beginning.
I knew other families who had to be separated for years, waiting for the chance to reunite.
That thought alone made me grateful, even in the uncertainty.
And deep down, I also reminded myself: if this didn’t work out, there could always be a Plan B.
Worst case, we could go back home.
That small thought gave me the freedom to step into the unknown with just enough courage.
The Hard Part of Starting Over
The reality of starting fresh hit us quickly.
Finding a job wasn’t as simple as sending out résumés. Over and over, we heard the same phrase: “Canadian experience required.”
How could we have Canadian experience if no one would give us a chance in the first place? It felt like a locked door we didn’t have the key for.
On top of that, we were trying to build a life with little ones who needed stability.
Daycare drop-offs and pick-ups had to be carefully coordinated, and my husband and I were determined not to become one of those “hallway couples” – the kind who only see each other for a few minutes as one heads out the door to work while the other comes home exhausted from a night shift.
We wanted more than survival; we wanted to actually live, together, as a family.
Small Wins That Mattered
Things slowly began to shift when we both finally landed jobs that worked with our schedules.
They looked nothing like the careers we left behind—I went from being an accountant to working at Walmart, and my husband, once an account manager, started as a warehouse clerk.
It wasn’t glamorous, and it was far from what we had imagined for ourselves.
But it was good.

For the first time, we realized that it was possible to have steady work that didn’t drain us completely. We could come home, sit down for dinner, laugh with our kids, and still have energy left to give each other.
That simple gift of time and presence was worth more than any impressive job title.
Finding a New Way Forward
Over time, our journey kept evolving.
With more kids joining our family and life constantly shifting, I started looking for ways to work from home.
It wasn’t about chasing big business dreams.
It was about creating a rhythm that allowed me to support my family while still being present for them.
Along the way, I discovered tools, resources, and opportunities that made it possible.
And now, I simply share my story because I want other moms to know—it is possible.
You don’t have to have it all figured out from day one. Sometimes it’s just about taking the next step, even if it looks different from what you once imagined.
What I’ve Learned From My Life As An Immigrant Mom
Looking back, what has carried us through wasn’t a perfect plan or having everything figured out – it was being together as a family.
That alone gave us strength.
If there’s anything I’ve learned, it’s this: you don’t need to see the whole road ahead to keep moving forward.
Take one step at a time, and trust that if the Lord has brought you here, He will also give you the grace to pull through. 🙏
Not every day is easy, but every day is a blessing.
